Asia Pacific Human Rights Network meet begins in New Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 11, IRNA -- The Opening ceremony of Asia Pacific Human Rights Network (APHRN), a forum of NGOs began their deliberations here Monday morning.

According to the IRNA reporter, the forum precedes the official 7th annual meeting of three-day Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions which will be inaugurated later this evening by India's Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

While inaugurating the forum, Coordinator, Ravi Nair, addressed issues of human rights in the region. The forum's secretariat will be presenting draft resolutions for the consideration of participants at the official meeting.

The forum provides an opportunity for different countries to learn from each other's experiences, strengthen collectively each  other's position and contribute to regional debates on human rights.

The Asia Pacific region is unique in having no regional human rights treaty and commission. Dialogue, cooperation and mutual support between national institutions in this region is, therefore, particularly important as a step in developing better mechanisms for the promotion and protection of human rights, it was at the inauguration.

The commissions that constitute the membership of the forum are Australia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Philippines and  Sri Lanka.

The objectives of the Asia Pacific forum, as set out in the Larrakia Declaration adopted at the end of the Darwin meet of 1996, include responding where possible with personnel and other support and assistance for establishment and development of national institutions in the countries of the Asia Pacific region.

The New Delhi meeting will consider a range of issues concerning human rights in the countries of the Asia Pacific region. It will also consider the admission of new members and matters relating to associate members.

The meeting will also focus on the issue of trafficking women and children as well as human rights and disability.
